Despite a positive reception from fans, the latest Mortal Kombat movie was not generally enjoyed by critics. This led to many questioning whether a sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat was in peril. However, now it seems that another film is on the way. According to recent reports, Simon McQuoid, director of the first film, will be coming back to helm Mortal Kombat’s sequel. So far, not much has been shared on the project, as it still appears to be in the early stages of creation, but some information has managed to slip through to fans.

It appears that some sort of multiverse style plot line could appear in Mortal Kombat’s sequel, similar to the story of Mortal Kombat 11. This means that fans could see the return of characters who met a gory end in the first film, as well as some alternate versions of fighters. Reptile, for example, had a human design when he first appeared in the game series, before a retcon decided he was actually a member of a humanoid race of reptilians, perhaps better fitting his name.

Fans were previously aware that a Mortal Kombat sequel was being worked on with a Moon Knight writer joining the team. However, with the news that McQuoid is returning to direct, fans can now feel more assured that the second film will truly be a continuation of the first. Already, many Mortal Kombat fans have some expectations for what they want to see in a sequel, including new characters, storylines from the games, and more.

It is unlikely one movie will be able to fulfill all Mortal Kombat fans’ expectations. However, there could be more than one piece of Mortal Kombat content heading to fans soon, as speculation on Mortal Kombat 12 grows. Back in January, some believed that Mortal Kombat 12 had been leaked by a NetherRealm Studios employee, meaning that the iconic fighting game studio could be ditching its pattern of producing a Mortal Kombat title then following that up with an Injustice game.

Mortal Kombat 2 is officially in development.
