Another exciting aspect of the trailer is the return of the X-Ray finisher. Expect to see some bone crunching action as the camera zooms straight into the opponent’s skin to show you what an up close and personal skull explosion might look like.

The frenetic action of the new Mortal Kombat game continues to impress. The least to be said is that the combat is years ahead of the last few iterations of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The new system is exciting, fast paced, and chock full of ideas taken from Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom. If Mortal Kombat needed to take ideas from somewhere, those are two great places to start.

At the same time, it’s nice to see they’re keeping all of the material that makes Mortal Kombat what it has always been. If asked, “What do you remember from Mortal Kombat?” the typical gamer would likely say Fatalities, stage specific executions, awesome special moves like Sub-Zero’s freeze and Scorpion’s “Get Over Here”, and an overabundance of blood! The combat was never necessarily memorable, compared to Mortal Kombat’s presentation. So what does NetherRealm do? They start taking combat cues from other great fighting games and bring back the Mortal Kombat stuff gamers really want.

Now Warner Bros. just needs to show more of the game. Scorpion is exciting to watch and the trailer above is great, but how about more a few more character reveals? From Game Rant’s experience, Mortal Kombat is lining up to be a huge release, so how about a little variety?

What Mortal Kombat characters would you like to start seeing more of, Ranters? Does the Scorpion vignette sate your thirst for more Mortal Kombat news, for the moment? Do you think Mortal Kombat can compete with the powerhouse of Super Street Fighter IV, or the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3? Is there enough room for all of these fighting games in the market?

Mortal Kombat is set for release in 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.
