And these are just the characters from the base game. Mortal Kombat X will also get plenty of downloadable content too, with new skins and characters being offered. There are four DLC packs in total and some of the content includes Predator and Jason Voorhees (from the Friday the 13th series) as playable characters and horror and Predator-themed skins.
While new fans and returning Mortal Kombat players will be able to find a reason to buy the DLC, developer NetherRealm Studios wants to draw even more people in. The developer has revealed Mortal Kombat X players will be able try before they buy via the game’s newly announced Tower Mode. Speaking to AngryJoe, the game’s director Ed Boon explained:
This method may help many players get a real feel for what the DLC characters are like. In Tower Mode, players go through a tower battling different kombatants and as they beat them and reach the higher levels, the enemies will gradually get more difficult. A typical demo mode might not be so useful as it would only test a character against a normal level opponent, but in Tower Mode, players can see how they hold up against tougher fighters.
Unfortunately, Boon didn’t reveal how long those event towers would last or how often they would change. The changes to the Premiere Tower will need to coincide with the release of each of the four DLC packs but it’s unclear if Premiere Tower events will take place in between DLC releases. And, if NetherRealm wants people to buy the DLC, it doesn’t make sense for them to let people play it for free for long amounts of time, as players won’t feel a need to hand over their money. The developer has yet to confirm those plans yet but Game Rant will keep you updated once more information is available.
Do you think Mortal Kombat X’s DLC strategy is a good idea? Should more games let people try DLC before they buy it?
Mortal Kombat X will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 14, 2015.
